North Carolina

 Fencing League

The NCFL has been established to promote the sport of fencing in high schools in North Carolina

Over the last 15 years, fencing has grown by leaps and bounds in our state.  Clubs across the state can count teenagers amongst their membership.  Our program’s goal is to establish varsity clubs in high school.  This will expose our sport to a larger population and allow for more competition within this peer group.

The league recently ended its third season.  Participation has grown again this year with as many as 55 students competing at league tournaments.

Our Support

There are Five entities that have made the creation of the NCFL possible.

1.The city of Greensboro’s Parks and Recreation Department. Long known to be one of the best departments in the nation. Their support of youth fencing only goes to prove that they are one of the most outstanding departments around.

2.The Delta H Fencers. For more than 20 years, Delta H has provided instruction and leadership in the Triad. A number of the league coaches can trace their roots in fencing directly to this club. Delta H provided both expertise and equipment with which to launch the league.

3.The Friends of Triad Fencing, Inc. This non-profit organization was created by area fencers to facilitate the North American Cup held in Greensboro in 2000. The funds raised by FTF were used to buy the electric equipment needed to make the league a reality. Funds are still needed (and will always be needed) so if you care to help our sport, please check out the FTF page on this site for information on how you can help.

4.The Coaches. These tireless volunteers who keep giving of themselves. Nothing would be possible without this group.

5.The Officials. Be they family, friends, or friends of friends they all come and work and make the tournaments happen for the kids.

Our thanks to all.

The Trophy

Every year the team that has complied the best record during the season gets to take the league trophy home and display it in their schools for a year.

This trophy carries more meaning than most.

In July of 2004, two of our fencers met tragic and untimely deaths. This loss, felt deeply by so many, moved us to name and dedicate our trophy to these two young men.

Our league trophy will always be known as:

The Smith-Austin Trophy

Dedicated to:

Charles Butler Smith
and
Jack Kemp Austin
